I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.
Carl Jung
We were honoured to photograph Carmel in our photo studio, a beautiful young woman and a cancer survivor. Here is her touching story:
“I’m Carmel and one year ago I was diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma cancer on my scalp. Unfortunately this meant that my scalp needed to be removed in order to remove the cancer. The amazing surgeons at Princess Margaret were able to rebuild my scalp using two muscles from my back and a skin graft from my leg. However, this also means that I have permanent hair loss and lots of scars.
Every year I set a list of goals for myself, and one of those goals for 2016 was to get a photography shoot – to show that I’m proud of my scars and to celebrate how far I have come. It’s been a really difficult road, but I’m back on track and these photos represent both sides of me – owning my scars and my new image, while also celebrating the glamour and fun of a wig!”
Dear Carmel, thank you for being our beautiful muse!
