As part of our recurring series of interviews, The Power of Her, featuring female artists we love, we want to present to you an interview with a founder and owner of Anouk Jewelry, Anat Kaplan. Enjoy her story and breathtaking photographs featuring her latest collection photographed by Lora Vertue.
Please tell us about your jewelry and unique style that defines your current designs.
I create fine jewelry inspired by nature and the ancient world. The bohemian and rustic look of my creations is achieved by hand carving, which results in highly sculptural and textured designs. I love working in all shades of gold, incorporating natural gemstones, especially raw diamonds and green sapphires.
What are your sources of inspiration?
I draw inspiration from the organic elements, especially water, its colours, flow and shimmer, and the textures that compliment it, like sand and rocks. I’d like my pieces to echo the raw beauty of nature, and to evoke that serene feeling of timelessness.
How did you decide to become a jewelry artist, tell us about your background?
I come from visual arts background; I fell in love with ancient jewellery during my university years studying art history. I took a course on ancient Greece and Rome and they showed us some jewellery pieces that blew me away. These treasures had so much character and personality, they really spoke to me. Still today ancient jewellery is endless source of inspiration.
Who are your clients, what kind of people come to you?
My clients are those who look for something different than the traditional wedding jewelry. They are often nature lovers, or creative folk, who appreciate local, artisanal pieces.
Often people come to me in search of a unique piece that would reflect their personality and those are my favourite clients to work with. Together we translate their story into gems and metals, creating a one of a kind, bespoke piece of jewelry.
Please tell us about your recent collection.
My most recent collection is the Golden Leafs line (http://anoukjewelry.com/product-category/collections/golden-leaves/), it was born in anticipation of spring after a long winter, and it’s all about growth, renewal and awakening.
How did you feel about working with KBL’s Lora Vertue on the recent photoshoot?
Shooting with Lora is always a big treat for me. I’ve worked with many photographers, but Lora’s impeccable style, great attention to detail and professionalism truly stand out.
But most of all, she’s a true artist with a unique creative vision and an amazing talent for capturing beauty. I can’t wait to work with her again!

Over the years of capturing the beauty of our clients, we came to realize that a professionally done make up and hair styling are some of the key elements of a successful photoshoot. We are all naturally beautiful, just the way we wake up in the morning, but a boudoir photoshoot requires a very specific type of make-up due to the way the camera reacts to light and shadows. A regular day-to-day make up will simply not work, as our eye sees the make-up differently than the camera does. Even the very popular today “natural” make up look requires a touch of a professional make up artist and about an hour of application to achieve correctly. That is why we have only the top experts from the wedding and fashion make up industries in our team, who have the skills and artistic vision to make our clients look their very best on the day of the photoshoot and create make-up and hair styles perfect for our photoshoots.
And that is why we include professional make-up in all of our packages. Hair styling is also highly recommended, and is either included, or is available as an add-on option for some packages.
We’ve narrowed it down to 5 main reasons to use the services of our professional beauty experts for your boudoir photoshoot:
1. Be stress free on the day of your photoshoot!
Best way to avoid stress? Let the professional do what they do best. Your make up will be done in the studio prior to your photoshoot by one of our team’s skilled make-up professionals, who will work with you to create that flawless look perfect for a boudoir photoshoot. All you have to do is arrive at the scheduled time and be ready to get pampered. Our make up artists use top of the line make up and hair styling products (eye lashes, hair products, etc. will all be provided), so there is no need for you to bring anything else (except hair extensions, which you can bring to the studio and our hair stylist will style them for you; or any special products that you would want our make up artists to use). Please inform us about any skin products sensitivities ahead of your photoshoot.
2. Camera ready make-up is different than typical make-up.
The type of make up needed for a boudoir photoshoot is different from an everyday make up or from an evening style make-up. The closest description will probably be something in between, but with a more enhanced contouring and special products to make sure your make-up stays in place by the end of the photoshoot. As you will have a multiple outfits to change into during the photoshoot, our make-up experts will find a style and colour palette that will not only enhance and compliment your facial features, but will match your skin tone as well as the colours of your outfits. While some women know a make-up artist they trust and work with regularly, we will not be able to provide direction during their make-up application and therefore will not be able to guarantee the end results, as opposed to our team’s MUA’s, which we know very well and trust to create exactly what we need.
3. Learn more about professional make-up techniques!
It is not every day that you get a chance to work with a beauty industry professional, so this is an experience on it’s own. This is also a great opportunity to learn something new about your skin, facial features and hair care products that work best for you, ask questions and get answers from a skilled professional. Our make up artists have an in-depth knowledge of current trends, various beauty products and techniques to make you look your best on a daily basis and are happy to share these secrets with you!
4. Try something new!
Ever wanted to try a different make-up style, go for a bolder lip or wander what a perfectly done smokey-eye would look like on you? Our make-up artists will be happy to make that happen in a professional way, to combine just the right colours that work with your individual facial features and skin tones. The best part – you can customize your look, as we are completely open to your ideas and want to create the make-up that you will love and will be happy with (and if we feel that intense 80′s eye-shadow look will not work with your eye shape, we will be completely honest about that too!).
5. The results are guaranteed.
Unless you are a professional make-up artist or a hair stylist yourself, there is a good chance you don’t have as much knowledge as our experts do. Sorry, but it is true! Our beauty experts live and breath make-up and hair styles and grow their knowledge on a daily basis working in a fashion and wedding industries, doing make up on myriad of skin tones, different faces and hair types. They will know which look would suit you best, while also work to create the make up and hair style that matches your style and that you will love!

We are very happy to announce that Kissed by Light Studio has moved to a new gorgeous location at 1655 Dupont Street! What began as a nightmare for our studio team this Winter, turned into something beautiful in the Spring. Forced to vacate our photography studio space at 224 Wallace Avenue, we began a search for a new space that would reflect Kissed by Light Photography’s sophisticated style and will have elegant rustic atmosphere that is characteristic of our photographs. We found exactly what we were looking for (and much more) in a heritage Toronto building at 1655 Dupont Street. Our bright and spacious corner unit is located on the third floor of a historical building now belonging to Planet Storage. This character building was built in 1929 and used to be a Viceroy Rubber Factory. During the renovations, the building owners have kept the original window framing and left exposed brick (and we are so glad they did!), keeping all unique architectural details intact. The building has many artist’s studios and is considered a creative hub in the midst of the up-and-coming Junction area of Toronto.
Our new home is light and beautiful. We feel inspired here more than ever and are looking forward to working in these beautiful walls for many years to come!
As photographers and artists we often look around ourselves in search of beauty and elegance. This time we found it where we spend most of our days – at our workplace, right in our beautiful photography studio. We are very proud to share with you the results of an artistic boudoir photoshoot with Kissed by Light Photo studio’s founder, gorgeous Lora Vertue. She is a powerful creative force behind our studio’s vision, philosophy and style, and to have her finally in front of the camera was both a professional challenge and honour. Being a modern woman, Lora was no stranger to personal body image issues that affect many women in our society. Giving birth to three adorable children was a rewarding experience for her, but it did cause her to approach her body more self-consciously. Harsh diets, vigorous exercise and weight issues have followed, her confidence dropped, but she found her peace and balance in a regular Yoga practice, heathy lifestyle and vegetarian diet. As a way to celebrate this milestone in her life, we did what we do best – an artistic boudoir photoshoot. This time however, Lora was the one in front of the camera. Dressed in exclusive outfits created by our stylist, Ameri, Lora brought elements of Yoga and contemporary dance into the photoshoot, creating a very unique and artistic look to express her emotional world. This photoshoot, just like many other boudoir photo sessions we did in our photo studio, helped our model to boost her confidence, to celebrate her womanhood, to appreciate and accept her body here and now. Sometimes all we need to be happy is a visual reminder of how beautiful we really are, inside and out.
Enjoy our selection!
We are excited to present to you the first in our series of interviews with exceptional women we have met in our photo studio.
Every day we meet different women from all walks of life and we fall in love with each and every one of them! Talented, unique, beautiful and powerful – each woman we photograph wins our hearts and provides a glimpse into a new, exciting world. That is how we decided to hold a series of interviews with some of our clients – to share their thoughts, talents and passions in life with you.
Below is a short interview with a talented (and gorgeous looking!) Toronto based artist and professional painter, Nelly Tsyrlin, who talked to us about her creative journey.
Early in her twenties, Nelly launched a successful modelling career. Being exposed to high fashion industry’s aesthetic, Nelly developed her own unique taste and artistic vision, which she then applied in a role of a stylist and later on in her paintings. Nelly is currently completing her MFA at the Royal Art Academy in St.-Petersburg, Russia.
KBL: Nelly, we are absolutely in love with your work! Please tell us about your art and a unique technique that defines your current paintings.
Nelly: My recent artworks are created by painting on glass and transferring the imprint to paper using the technique called monotype. Each artwork is original and a one-off. Each mark placed on glass is permanent, leaving no room for error and creating a sense of immediacy and exploration.
For an artist who spent years deciphering the “how to” secrets of classical realism, to diverge into a more experimental and spontaneous direction was a big surprise, first of all, for myself. It is hard to say what exactly pushed me to try out something new, but it could be the simple fact that I had no access to life models and my easel was broken at the time and all I had in my studio was a glass table I inherited from a friend of mine, Lora Vertue.
KBL: What about the subject matter of your artwork, what inspires your choice of a subject?
Nelly: The subject matter originates from body language observations. Our body language goes further then words in portraying our subconscious intentions, primal desires, feelings and thoughts. And it is those intentions that inspire me and that I strive to capture on paper.
KBL: What did you think about the photoshoot in our studio with Lora Vertue and how was it special for you?
Nelly: I’ve enjoyed every minute of it! The girls managed to fuse my past career with my present passion, which made the images very special and dear to me. The photographs turned out fantastic, the best I could hope for and much more.
KBL: Please tell us what is next in store for you and what are your plans for the future as an artist.
Nelly: Looking into the future, I plan to explore my aesthetic through brand collaborations. I want to share my art with wider audience, while devoting myself to continuously push the boundaries creatively.
